Taking Unicorn Squad to Kenya: Opening Doors for Girls in STEM

What if the next great innovator were a 10-year-old girl in rural Kenya – but she never got the chance to build?

The world faces a growing shortage of skilled people in tech and science, yet millions of girls are still excluded from these fields. We’re working to change that.

In Estonia, the HK Unicorn Squad has already opened doors for thousands of girls by giving them access, encouragement, and a safe space to explore STEM.

Now, with the support of NGO Mondo, CIVS Kenya, and the Estonian Centre for International Development (ESTDEV), the Unicorn Squad model is taking root in Kenya.

In July, our team travelled to Kisumu County to launch the pilot programme. We trained teachers, supported the creation of girls’ science clubs, and introduced practical, hands-on STEM learning. Alongside that, we met with school leaders, community representatives, and local officials – essential allies in keeping the spark alive.

One teacher described the experience:

“I got really empowered and it moved me. It was like a sleeping lioness woke up.”

We left inspired and will return later this year for the first science camp, and to see how far that spark has grown.
